A Donut With The Cutest Baby Ever! - Amy's Donuts , Colorado Springs Colorado

Wherever we go, I am always on the lookout for great donuts.  On our recent trip to see our new great grandson, who by the way is the cutest baby on earth, we were told about Amy's donuts. My step-daughter and fellow snacker was the one doing the telling, so I knew I had to listen! It took another day,but we loaded up the vehicles and off we went.
Amy's donuts has locations in Columbus.O. Tucson,Az, and a new one coming soon in Spokane Valley,Washington and of course the one we visited in Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs locationis open 7 days a week.
As we entered the store, we were greeted by a showcase filled with almost every donut you could imagine.  The hardest part was trying to limit myself to one donut. They had Andes Mint donuts, Cinnamon Toast Crunch donuts, maple bacon fudge, traditional donuts, frosted donuts of all flavors, filled and seasonal donuts, and many more.
I finally settled on an Orange Creamsickle donut that tasted like it was just made.  This was at evening time too. Everybody with us had a different donut and for the most part, were very happy. Definately would go back, to try a different donut and visit the cutest baby ever!  You can find locations and hours for Amy's donuts on their website.  I can see this donut shop going nation wide.

Just Plain Good-Das Dutchman Essenhaus, Middlebury,Indiana

On our trips to Shipshewana, Indiana,in the heart of Amish country, we always make it a point to travel 6 miles down hwy 20 to Middlebury to visit one of our favorite Amish cooking restaurants called Das Dutchman Essenhaus. On our most recent trip, we learned from our brother in law Tim, that Essenhaus was eat house in German, and that is exactly what I did! Eat.  TheEssenhaus offers menu dining, and  family dining, but we always go for the buffet. It's nothing fancy, in fact it's pretty simple. What is offered is good. mouth watering crispy, juicy, fried chicken, which is the highlight for me. They also have beef and spaghetti, vegetables and good, moist, dressing; potatoes, soups, noodles and salads. Sometimes you can get there just at the right time and they still have the breakfast buffet up and you can get some of that too. Still not enough?  Meander past the crafts to the bakery, where you can choose a doughnut as big as your head or a house made pie along with other bakery goods. Das Dutchman Essenhaus is located on hwy 20 in Middlebury Indiana. You can find them on the web at:

Union Square Donuts- Be Sure To Get Two

Leaving for home, ending our Boston trip, we wanted to stop in on what we heard was one of the best doughnut places in the United States.
We really weren't sure what we were going to get. In this town, there is a Dunkin' Donuts on every corner. You really have to ask, "Do these people know what a good doughnut really is?"
After a little trouble finding the place, we narrowed it down to a block. Thanks Siri!
Rebbel decided we should get out of the car and look for it. I was walking down the block when a guy stuck a board out on the sidewalk that said Union square Donuts. I had found our destination.
Racks of doughnuts were in the area waiting to be filled or covered. They weren't cheap either. One doughnut was going to cost around three dollars. The lady in front of us ordered almost a dozen. I was figuring in my head how many hours it would take me to work for a dozen!
These were not your run of the mill doughnuts. They offered toasted coconut, peanut butter and jelly, maple bacon and Boston cream, just to name a few. I decided on the Boston Cream at first, but was told they were short on help and the filled doughnuts wouldn't be done for another 15 minutes. We decided to go with the toasted coconut and maple bacon.
Those doughnuts were so good, my wife wanted another, but we were already  on the road and I thought it best to have enough gas money to get home than invest in two more doughnuts. She still reminds me how I wouldn't let her get another doughnut. My recommendation if you go, go a little later than opening time so they have plenty of time to have their wares out, and bring your Visa so you can get more than one! They are worth the price!
Union Square Donuts is located at 20 Bow St in Somerville, Ma.  You can find them on the net at unionsquaredonuts.com

Michigan's Best and Open Doughnut Place - Sweetwater's Donut Mill

Sweetwater's in Kalamazoo Mi
Here we were on a long holiday weekend and no cool place picked out to eat. I decided to look up some of the Michigan's best food on the net.  Right away there were lists from M Live.  I set  our site for the number one doughnut shop, and the number seven hamburger joints located in Jackson, Mi.  I would have gone for the number one but they were closed for the winter, so we decided for Jackson.  We pulled up to number one on the list to find out they are closed Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Evidently life is good when you are the best so you don't have to work as often.  We decided to go to the number 7 hamburger joint.  Surely at number 7 they would have to work.  Pulled in to a vacant parking lot and a sign that said closed Mondays. We decided to check out their number two doughnut place down the road in Kalamazoo.

The place I chose is called Sweetwater's Donut Mill.  Sweetwater's has 3 locations and they are open 24/7 which was a real selling point given our luck so far.  We chose 6 different doughnuts that turned out to be all very good.  I walked in and there before me were cases and cases filled with every doughnut you could imagine.  Sweetwater's offers such delicacies as a Carmello, Snickers, German Cake, and a Cloud doughnut. Too many to list all of them. In all fairness we bought the doughnuts at about 1:00 in the afternoon and while tasty, they weren't at the peak freshness.  The chocolate frosting my wife got had just the right amount of

half dozen box of yum!
crisp on the outside before reaching the nutmeg tasting cake inside.  I love that in a doughnut.   If you want to check out what I consider the best doughnut shop in Michigan,  at least the best doughnut shop  that is most likely to be open, you can find them at 3333 Stadium Dr, or the one we visited at 2138 Sprinkle Rd Kalamazoo. They also have a location at 2807 Capitol Rd. In Battle Creek Michigan. Find them on the web at..http://sweetwatersdonuts.com/
