Leaving for home, ending our Boston trip, we wanted to stop in on what we heard was one of the best doughnut places in the United States.
We really weren't sure what we were going to get. In this town, there is a Dunkin' Donuts on every corner. You really have to ask, "Do these people know what a good doughnut really is?"
After a little trouble finding the place, we narrowed it down to a block. Thanks Siri!
Rebbel decided we should get out of the car and look for it. I was walking down the block when a guy stuck a board out on the sidewalk that said Union square Donuts. I had found our destination.
Racks of doughnuts were in the area waiting to be filled or covered. They weren't cheap either. One doughnut was going to cost around three dollars. The lady in front of us ordered almost a dozen. I was figuring in my head how many hours it would take me to work for a dozen!
These were not your run of the mill doughnuts. They offered toasted coconut, peanut butter and jelly, maple bacon and Boston cream, just to name a few. I decided on the Boston Cream at first, but was told they were short on help and the filled doughnuts wouldn't be done for another 15 minutes. We decided to go with the toasted coconut and maple bacon.
Those doughnuts were so good, my wife wanted another, but we were already on the road and I thought it best to have enough gas money to get home than invest in two more doughnuts. She still reminds me how I wouldn't let her get another doughnut. My recommendation if you go, go a little later than opening time so they have plenty of time to have their wares out, and bring your Visa so you can get more than one! They are worth the price!
Union Square Donuts is located at 20 Bow St in Somerville, Ma. You can find them on the net at unionsquaredonuts.com
