As we pulled into New Haven, it was already getting dark and hard to see. We had come from Philly, past New York City via the expensive George Washington bridge, fighting construction traffic all the way. It's always exciting when your I phone is dictating the route. I was kind of surprised to see that the hamburger joint was located next to some college. I asked my wife if she knew of a college in this town. Neither one of us knew.
We had come to New Haven to visit the hamburger's birthplace, or at least one of the first. Louis' Lunch.
Located on Crown St in an old small building, we were surprised it was open until 2:00 am. Louis lunch is one of those places that have rules. They do not like ketchup in that place, or any other condiment. You order your hand ground burger and it is cooked in an old fashioned broiler type vertical mechanism. Same way they have been cooking them all along. You can add sliced tomatoes and onions and cheese spread if you want it. It is served on toast. The same way it was way back.
Is it the best burger I ever had??? No. Probably wouldn't even rank in my top 10. But you have to eat here because it's where it all started. Oh and that college we didn't know, turned out to be a little school called Yale. I really need to read up on these cities before we go there. You can find them unlike the way it was way back, on the web at, http://www.louislunch.com/index.php
